I was over at Archive.org and happened upon Kate Gaffney, Wow what a find. “Falls Bridge” and “What Kind Of Man” have been on the MP3 player for a week or two now and between her killer band and her almost Bobbie Gentryish vocals. I am having a lot of fun listening to her.

“Falls Bridge” starts with a killer shuffling guitar groove and it is just so seductive. Between Kate Gaffney’s singing and the keyboard players impeccable placement of notes (have a listen to the start of “What Kind Of Man” with it’s huge organ sound that brings to mind the opening bars of “The Weight”.

This album manages to happily straddle 40 years of American music, and it’s little wonder, here is a quote about Kate’s musical tastes…

A Classic Rock Child, Gaffney recalls rooting through her parents’ “small but quality” collection of vinyl records, discovering some of the artists that would influence her most: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, Van Morrison, Tom Petty, Janis Joplin, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, CSNY. “The music of the 60s and 70s was honest and bold and it got down to the nitty gritty; there was no holding back. To me that is quality music – when artists can give it their all and manage to strike a resonating chord in the depths of the listener’s soul – and that is what the music and songwriting of those decades does for me.”

Still. don’t be put off by my pretentious waffle, head over to www.myspace.com/kategaffney and make up your own mind. I am pretty sure you will love it.
