Dan Warner – Night Parrots

We last mentioned Dan Warner back in early 2007 and mentioned that his new album was coming. It’s finally arrived.
If you listen to Jonnie Von Goes’ show on Melbournes 3RRR you will have heard Dan’s Warner Corner segment. For those of you that haven’t, the short version is that Jon picks a theme for the show ( out of the air at random? Out of hat? Out of a perverse sense of curiosity to see what his guests come up with? Very likely… but I digress) and then Dan finds a song that fits the theme and does a reworking of it to make it his own.
The Night Parrots album is very much like that, there are a lot of songs on the album that have been played by various incarnations of Dan’s bands over the years and this is a wonderful collection that treats them as a whole. It isn’t a repackaged “Greatest Hits” CD, it’s a considered reworking of the ideas and themes that Dan has found to be important. James Keelaghan did this a few years back with his “Then Again” album”
It’s really hard to pick one song, this album is full of stories that you will recognise, it’s Australian without being the sickly sweet “Hey True Blue” patriotism for sale of some performers. These are real stories about real people told by a master storyteller who has had time to get everything just right. The musicianship and the performances are just brilliant.
If I had to pick one song it would be “Under Melaleuca“, head over to Dan’s Bandcamp site and check it out. You will unsderstand why it stayed with me. The rest of the tracks on offer will keep you going until you can get hold of the shiny plastic disc from his website.
Highly Recommended
