The Maybes? – Summertime

Another contender for the “anthem of summer”, even if the The Maybes? might be consdered as cheating by calling their song “Summertime”. It’s all guitars, vocals and drums that rush headlong at the exuberant chorus. I have to confess that Pete Townsend would be impressed with the guitars, fabulous slash and ring and then when the chorus hits they tuck in under the vocals.

Here is some of the hype that’s been written about them…

‘Summertime’ is a heart racing anthem powered by the spirit of a wild, endless, teenage summer. With a relentless hot heeled groove and shimmering harmonies, the track climaxes in rapturous bliss. The summertime is here! The essential catalyst for a driving shot of summer high!

  • “Massive classic pop (like Beach Boys covering The Who) it’ll give you the same thrill as when you first heard Oasis or Arctic Monkeys. The best new rock band around…definitely Maybes?” News Of The Word
  • “Jingle-jangle pop perfection from Liverpool. More, please.” – The Sunday Times
  • “The Definitelys, anyone?” – NME

I love “Summertime”, it’s short, punchy and just lifts the day when it appears on the MP3 player. The rest of the songs are possibly better, “Trick Of The Light” is a slower piece that has a bit more space in the mix that allows singer Nick Ellis(?) to show what he can do. But the track I suspect that will stay with my MP3 player on a more permanent arrangement , is the impossibly glorious “Promise”. This is the title track off the album and if the band can perform this piece live then they will end up owning the world. Full of fabulous post Edge guitar, and like the “irish” band powered by a rhythm section that just doesn’t stop. For the first four minutes it’s relentless and then the guitarists start playing with the sounds in an atmospheric wonderland and then power on to the finish. Definitely one for guitarists… maybe?

Seriously Highly Recommended (and way too much fun)
