Pygmy Globetrotters – Bouncy

What is it with the English and weird noises? I personally blame Delia Derbyshire and Doctor Who. There is a whole generation grew up listening to the very cool piece of electronica that is the Doctor Who theme, and then somewhere in the Seventies synths allowed us all access to a nearly inexhaustible palette of bleeps, burbles, kachings and god knows what else.

Well, just when you think that the bleep is dead along comes todays band Pygmy Globetrotters. Now apart from the collection of synth sounds, fuzz bass and inevitable distortion supplied by Ian Turley the merge that lot with a bunch of noise from laptops as well as vocals supplied by Richard Owen.

“Pygmy Globetrotters are using junk-shop keyboards and cheap laptops to offer a digital update of budget analogue pop.” The Sunday Times Magazine

Now I know this wont be everybodies cup off tea but there is something really intriguing about how all this stuff hangs together, there is light and shade in the arrangements and the hypnotic drumming in “Bouncy” is a nice piece of programming. Paul Lester of the Gaurdian says they bring to mind Cabaret Voltaire amongst others, I think he is right. Lots of clever ideas that were well executed and largely overlooked. We can hope for a better fate for “Pygmy Globetrotters”

Reccomended
