Today’s band, Genticorum bring back memories of those concerts. They have play with the same intensity and passion, have a similar ear for arrangement and just amaze me with their musician ship.

Genticorum fired up in 2000, when Alex, Yann and Pascal discovered their common interest in French Canadian fiddle tunes. From that beginning they have added contemporary pieces to their repotoire and have become a fine contemporary folk band. They use wooden flute, fiddle, acoustic guitar, jaw harp, bass and foot percussion. All topped of with some excellent vocals.

The track I have on the MP3 player is “Cascou”, it starts with jaw harp and then the truly deadly bass comes in and before you know it they have immersed you in a hypnotic Penguin Cafe Orchestra groove (think theme from the movie Malcolm). I really look forward to hearing more from these guys and am miffed that I missed them when they were in Australia earlir this year.

Here is a performance of “Cascou” from the ABC Sunday Arts show…

This is what they say to promote their band:

Canada’s “Best Folk Ensemble” Genticorum allow the uninitiated a glimpse into the spirited world of traditional Quebecois music, blending energetic fiddle & feet, sonorous flute, rock-solid bass and pulsing guitar into a tight sonic weave with gorgeous three part vocals!

Highly Recommended
