Saltfishforty

I’ll be honest, I have always really enjoyed my time in Orkney (we’ve been there twice now). Sadly we didn’t catch Saltfishforty, quite a pity. They are really engaging, I suggest you have  a listen to “The Burray Strathspey and Reel” over at Myspace, and then have a listen to the live recordings they have there as well.

The first obvious comparison is with “Show Of Hands“, they are are duo, Show of Hands is a duo – Saltfishforty are a duo, both acts have awesome fiddlers, both acts have a mix  both original and traditional compositions, but Steve Knightley and Phil Beer are investigating a different path.  You could put these two bands on the same bill and they would be totally different.

Here is some of what the website has to say.

douglas montgomery (fiddle) and brian cromarty (guitar/mandola/vocals) are orkney duo – saltfishforty. combining the traditional music of orkney with original compositions, they released their debut album, goose music, to critical acclaim in may 2003. their second album, orkney twister, was released in december 2005. building on the success of the albums, their reputation as a fresh and dynamic live act is blossoming.

Here is some video from a concert last year

I would love to see these guys the next time they are out this way ( even more I would love to get back to Orkney and see them there…).
