100 Monkeys

By thatch • Feb 4th, 2009

100monkeys are a band that aren’t perfect. Far from it but they are interesting. Every track is one take. No safety net , no “we’ll fix it later”. It’s all there warts and all and as a result it has a honesty to it’s performances that I find wonderfully refreshing. There are the odd moments [...]

Deadfly Ensemble

By thatch • Feb 2nd, 2009

The Deadfly Ensemble‘s, “A Seed Catalog For Extinct Annuals”, is a gem. A dark and disturbing gem. But a gem nonetheless.

This has been wandering off an on my MP3 player for a while now and they are one of those bands where you think “OK I’ll delete that one… or maybe not. May be next week” Repeat for the last three or so months.

My problem is that they are in the same playlist I keep “Abney Park” in and they are just such a perfect complement to the “Air Pirates“.

The Script – We Cry

By thatch • Jan 27th, 2009

The Script I remember reading about “The Script” last year and somehow forgot to look them up (my only defense is that there is much music and so little time). A week or so back I was watching the “Live From Abbey Road series and they were on the same show as “Matchbox 20 and [...]

Jun Miyake

By thatch • Dec 12th, 2008

Jun Miyake is fearless. Play the track “Alvirverde” (It’s the first track over at Myspace) and you will see what I mean. The track starts with a beautifully played and recorded bass, then the drum machine percussion kicks in. And before you have a chance to register what is going on, there are these amazing [...]

Hooray For Earth – Take Care

By thatch • Nov 8th, 2008

Hooray For Earth are awesome, lets not mess around today, head straght to www.myspace.com/hooray4earth and press play. Which track? Trust me, it doesn’t matter. They are all brilliant. This is a band that enjoys their music. Big seems to be such a small word for this bands sound. Big guitars, big drums and just fabulous [...]

Pygmy Globetrotters – Bouncy

By thatch • Nov 7th, 2008

What is it with the English and weird noises? I personally blame Delia Derbyshire and Doctor Who. There is a whole generation grew up listening to the very cool piece of electronica that is the Doctor Who theme, and then somewhere in the Seventies synths allowed us all access to a nearly inexhaustible palette of [...]
