Songs From the Blue House

By • Feb 7th, 2009

I’ve finally surfaced from my self imposed hibernation and for my first 2009 post, I’ve come across a wonderfully inspiring act called “Songs From the Blue House” hereinafter referred to as SftBH. Me, I love the Blue Oyster Cult and their song “Don’t Fear the Reaper”. Here that song is covered by SftBH. Described as [...]

Oren Lavie – Her Morning Elegance

By • Feb 6th, 2009

Jools sent me this video – it made me laugh like a maniac. Press play, watch the video and then we will chat. OK that was fun wasn’t it? Now press play again and this time listen to the song.  Maybe you should head over to www.myspace.com/orenlavie and actually get it playing in the background. [...]

Saturday Samples: Glasvegas

By • Jan 31st, 2009

Glasvegas are a four piece band from Glasgow.

Yes folks our first Scottish band of 2009, and they are a beaut.

Their sound is solidly based on the ever reliable three-chord trick and heaps of reverb. It worked for Phil Spector and come to think of it – just about every body else since then (“Born To Run” anyone). Add some singalong choruses and big guitars (they don’t hurt either).

The Hoosiers – Run Rabbit Run

By • Jan 28th, 2009

The Hoosiers are an English band from the UK and Sweden. I spotted them a few weeks back on “Live from Abbey Road” show. My next stop was their site and I was hooked by “Cops and Robbers” which has the band channelling Robert Smith and the Cure. (Not a bad thing in my book).

Marina and the Diamonds

By • Dec 13th, 2008

A friend overseas sent me a review from the Guardian of “Marina and the Diamonds”. Paul Lester wrote a “New Band Of The Day” piece about them/her back in September. Here is a bit of it… Female performer with quaint Christian name and inanimate-object appendage alert! Marina and the Diamonds are the latest “and the” [...]

The Weather Machines

By • Dec 11th, 2008

Short, sharp and to the point. That’s my initial reaction to “The Weather Machines” song “Parts Of Speech” and “202” The Weather Machines (the musical alias of Jason Ward), produce an infectious brand of guitar-driven, indie pop-rock. You will find yourself tapping your foot almost immediately (and unconsciously) and the more extroverted of you may [...]

Deleted Scenes – Fake IDs

By • Dec 10th, 2008

Deleted Scenes is one of those bands that I kept hearing about rather than actually hearing. So I was wonderfully surprised when they turned out to be way better than I was expecting. You know the kind of thing, everyone sings a bands praises and when you get to finally hear them, you end up [...]
